Hamworthy Combustion's Wet Electrostatic Precipitator has been developed as the ideal polishing filter for improving the particulate matter and/or aerosol collection efficiency of any existing or new wet scrubbing system to comply with the latest Environmental Regulations at minimal additional pressure drop. Pollutant laden gases enter the Wet ESP from the bottom and flow upward through a perforated plate that ensures a uniform gas distribution. Gases then enter the collecting zone where dust and aerosols are removed. The collecting area consists of cylindrical collection electrodes (Tubes) with discharge electrodes (Rods) located in the center of each cylinder. Tubes are earthed and Rods are connected to a High Voltage DC supply to create a strong electric field inside each tube. Gases are ionized as they flow through the electrical field thereby negatively charging both aerosol and dust particles. Due to the electrical field, dust particles and aerosols migrate towards the inner wall of the Collecting Electrodes, coalesce on it and drain off by gravity. A spray system, normally operated once per shift, flushes the Collecting Electrodes thus preventing any scaling. The Hamworthy Combustion Wet ESP can be applied with minimal impact for the retrofitting to any Wet Scrubbing System.

Collection efficiencies higher than 98% are achievable on particulate matter and aerosols independently from size so that the Wet ESP can be effectively applied to sub-micron dust scrubbing. Wet Tubular Design with Flushing Sprays ensures suitability to severe services with sticky dusts. A single round-shaped Wet ESP ID 4.5m (15ft) can process 51,000 m3/h (30,000 acfm) saturated gas with less than 3 mbar Pressure Drop, 38 kW/h electrical power consumption and 2 tonnes/day fresh water consumption. Higher flow rates can be processed with twin installations or special design. The absence of moving parts, like rapping devices, ensures high reliability thus minimizing down-time for unscheduled maintenance. Single units as well as complete packages including, piping, valves, ductworks, etc. can be supplied. ASME Code, BS:4994 Code or any other international pressure vessel design code can be applied.
