Flarscan control can be used on all flare tips using steam or air as the smoke control medium, particularly where steam is at a premium.
The Flarscan system functions by measuring the radiant heat emitted by the flame and controlling the steam/air flow proportionally by means of a steam regulator or fan controller.
Flame emissivity varies with the composition of the hydrocarbon gases being flared and generally increases with the increasing tendency of these gases to produce smoke. The steam/air requirement for smokeless combustion also increases in a similar manner. The Flarscan system includes four Detector Heads to monitor the flame and a Compensator Unit for ambient correction. The Detector Heads are equipped around the tip and connected in parallel to produce a signal independent of wind direction and flame position.

The system is designed so that, except for the connections between the Detectors, the main cable run to the control unit consists of a two wire system of screened wire conductors. This can be over any distance. The signal from the Detector units is converted into the standard process equipment signal at the Anti-Pollutant-Controller (A.PC). The A.PC. Unit provides a milliamp ere signal to a pneumatic transducer and hence to the steam control valve actuator which regulates the steam flow rate. The A.PC. Unit is a solid state, panel mounted, controller with easily replaceable circuit cards. The A.PC. Unit includes an indicator for input and output signals, adjustable gain setting and an auto/manual changeover facility. The Flarscan system can be supplied for elevate and ground flares.
